What is Tabata training?

Tabata is a form of high-intensity interval training: 20 seconds of all-out effort followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated 8 times for a total of 4 minutes. It grew out of research by Dr. Izumi Tabata and colleagues at Ritsumeikan University, and is known worldwide simply as "TABATA" — a way to train both aerobic and anaerobic capacity in a very short session.

How to use this Tabata timer

This page is preset to 20 seconds of work and 10 seconds of rest for 8 sets. Press Start and a countdown beep sounds in the last 3 seconds of each phase, with an audio cue at every switch — so you never need to look at the screen while you move. To label an exercise, rename a timer; to add a warm-up, insert a timer at the top. Any setup you build can be saved and shared just by copying the URL.

Train safely

Tabata only delivers its benefits when you truly go all-out, which is also what makes it demanding. Always warm up first, and scale the number of sets to how you feel — there's no need to push through when your body says stop.
